How Does a Septic Trench Work?

Septic trench, drain field trench and leach field trench all refer to the same system. These terms refer to the trenches where wastewater from a septic system is filtered through soil and naturally treated before returning to the groundwater. An absorption septic trench is an integral part of a septic system used for wastewater disposal. It is a trench that is dug into the ground with a series of perforated pipes surrounded by gravel or other material. The purpose of the septic trench is to allow the treated effluent or wastewater from the septic tank to be dispersed into the soil, where it can naturally filter and be absorbed. The process involves:

Septic Tank - Wastewater from your home flows into the septic tank, where solids settle at the bottom, and the liquids, referred to as effluent flows out.

Septic Trench / Leach Field / Drain Field - The effluent flows into a septic trench containing perforated pipes to be dispersed into the surrounding soil. The soil further filters and treats the effluent, removing contaminants before it returns to the groundwater.

Trench Construction - The trench is typically filled with gravel, and the perforated pipes are laid within the gravel. The effluent seeps out of the pipes and is absorbed by the soil.

Signs Your Septic Trench Needs Maintenance

There are a few key signs that your septic trench or leach field may be in need of maintenance. When these signs occur consult the experts at Express Wastewater to have your septic system thoroughly inspected and issues resolved. Regular maintenance can help prevent major problems from occurring down the track. Signs to look out for include:

  1. Slow drains: Slow draining water in sinks, bathtubs, or toilets, could be a sign that the septic system isn't properly filtering water through the trench.
  2. Soggy or smelly yard: Unusually wet ground or unpleasant odours around your septic trench can indicate wastewater is backing up or not being properly absorbed into the soil.
  3. Gurgling sounds: Gurgling noises in your plumbing can be a result of a clog or backup in the system, involving the trench area.
  4. Lush vegetation: If you notice unusually green lush grass over the septic trench, this could be a sign that untreated waste is surfacing, possible cause being a failing leach field.
